409 Stainless Steel Sheet offers economical corrosion resistance and good formability. It is especially useful for applications that require oxidation or corrosion protection beyond the capability of carbon steel and coated steels. 409 Stainless Steel Plate uses include automotive and truck exhaust systems, agricultural spreaders, gas turbine exhaust silencers, tubular manifolds, fuel filters and heat exchangers. ASTM A240 409 provides good corrosion and oxidation resistance for automotive and non-automotive exhaust applications. ASTM A240 Type 409 is particularly suitable for parts which need more improved weldability and complex shapes. ASTM A240 SS Gr 409 cold worked and annealed do not show any detrimental effect on ductility after exposure of up to 1000 hours within the 885 °F embrittlement range. The corrosion resistance of A240 Tp 409 is similar to A240 Tp 410 which helps it to perform far superior to carbon steel products in most applications. ASTM A240 Grade 409 exhibit good wet corrosion resistance to sulfates, chlorides and many organic acids and have proven to be acceptable for many automotive exhaust applications. 409 Stainless Steel Coil is readily welded by arc welding processes. When gauge thickness and weld joint geometry allow the use of gas shielded metal-arc welding, joints having good properties are easily obtained. 409 Stainless Steel Strip provides must be pre-heated to temperatures of 150 to 260°C before welding. Its ductility can be improved by annealing post-welding at temperatures of 760 to 815°C. It offers scaling resistance at temperatures up to 675°C during continuous operation, and up to 815°C under intermittent conditions. These temperatures obtain to specific service environments.
